A
A nutrient medium or culture medium that is commonly used to culture bacteria in the lab.
2) Broth

4) Culture
A
Microbes growing in/on culture medium.
5) Culture Medium
A
Nutrients prepared for microbial growth. Solution containing all of the nutrients and necessary physical growth requirements.
6) Differential Media
A
Designed to separate organisms based on type of growth or end products of metabolic reactions.
7) Enrichment Media
A
Used to increase the relative concentration of certain microbes in the culture prior to plating on solid selective medium.
8) Inoculating Loop
A
Made of platinum or wire used to streak, smear or take a sample of a culture.
9) Inoculum
A
Microbes introduced into a medium to initiate growth.
10) Pour Plate
A
Bacteria are inoculated into a tube of melted agar cooled to a temperature of 45 C, mixed, and poured into a sterile plate.
11) Selective Media
A
Media that suppresses the growth of some microorganisms while allowing the growth of others.
12) Solid Medium
A
Media containing agar or some other, mostly inert solidifying agent.
13) Spread Plate
A
Liquid cultures are spread on the center of an agar surface using a bent sterile glass rod.
14) Streak Plate
A
Petri dish is streaked in manner such that individual colonies may be isolated.
