Trey looked out the window. The rain was still pouring down. He threw his baseball glove on the couch with a sigh. The thunder cracked and his phone dinged. The game is cancelled because of the weather. He threw the phone back on his bed.
Brett sweated in his chair. The clock in the classroom ticked loudly. Brett looked at the test question again. He had no clue what the answer was. His teacher paced around the room. He could not concentrate. Time was running out. His heart pounded.
Kiki the cat licked her lips and stared at Bitty the Bird in her cage. Kiki tiptoed to the edge of the kitchen counter. Kiki went for it. She sprang toward the birdcage, but she slipped. Kiki fell off the counter and landed in the trash can.
We thought the game was over, but Derrick had one last free-throw. He stepped up to the line. The stadium was completely silent. Everyone was still. Derrick squared up on the line. Sweat beaded on his forehead. All eyes were on Derrick.
Streaking into the room, she grinned widely, lit up like a firefly, and announced, “I am getting married!!”
Huddled silently under the table, she clung to the only picture she had of her parents and shook convulsively as her wide eyes scanned the floor for the feet in heavy boots.
Gently smiling, the mother tenderly tucked the covers up around the child’s neck, and carefully, quietly, left the room making sure to leave a comforting ray of light shining through the opened door should the child wake.
The laughing wind skipped through the village, teasing trees until they danced with anger and cajoling the grass into fighting itself, blade slapping blade, as the silly dog with golf ball eyes and flopping, slobbery tongue bounded across the lawn.
Bursting through the door, the irate mother screamed uncontrollably at the innocent teacher who had given her child an F.
It was a dark and stormy night. In her attic bedroom Margaret Murray, wrapped in an old patchwork quilt, sat on the foot of her bed and watched the trees tossing in the frenzied lashing of the wind.
