PS-2.2 Isotopes
Test Description: Define isotope, unstable isotope, mass number vs atomic mass, determine neutron number if given mass number.
Instructions: Answer all questions to get your test result.
1) The atomic number of an element
A
is equal to the number of protons
B
can be different for different isotopes of the same element
C
changes when an atom of an element reacts with another element
D
is usually a decimal number (such as 13,4)
2) The mass number of an element
A
is the sum of the elements protons and neutrons
B
is found at the bottom of an element's square on the periodic table
C
is the same for all atoms of an element
D
can be found by rounding off the atomic mass
3) Isotopes of the same element
A
have different numbers of protons, but the same number of neutron
B
have the same number of protons, but different numbers of neutrons.
C
have the same mass numbers
D
have the same number of protons but different numbers of electrons.
4) Atomic mass
A
is the weighted average of the masses of the naturally occuring isotopes of an element.
B
is always a whole number
C
cannot be found on the periodic table
D
is equal to the number of protons plus the number of electrons in an atom
5) An unstable isotope of an element
A
does not have a correct ratio of neutrons to protons in an atoms nucleus,
B
can only be produced in a laboratory
C
will never breakdown.
D
is a very rare occurance
6) Radiation
A
is rare in natural settings
B
is the term used to describe the particles/energy that are emmitted during nuclear decay.
C
is released only from stable isotopes of elements.
D
is always dangerous and harmful to humans.
7) Nuclear decay occurs when
A
atoms age and become fragile.
B
stable atomic nuclei break down
C
the nucleus of a radioactive isotope emits particles or energy
D
viruses infect nuclei and cause them to decompose
8) If a lithium atom (atomic number 3) has a mass number of 7, how many neutrons does it have.
A
7
B
3.5
