In December 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor (a United States naval base in Hawaii), killing around 2400 Americans and wounding about 1200. This attack brought the United States into World War II.

In April 1945, Allied forces entered Berlin. Hitler committed suicide. A few days later, on May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered.

Five week battle (February - March, 1945) between Japan and the United States. The US captured the island, but lost nearly 7,000 soldiers. Iwo Jima and the Battle of Okinawa caused the US to seek ways to end the war without more US casualties.
